Giants sign OL Wes Martin off Washington Football Team’s practice squad

The New York Giants had a need for an offensive lineman and were able to fill it within the division.

The Giants announced on Monday that they have signed Wes Martin from the practice squad of the Washington Football Team.

The 25-year-old Martin is a former fourth-round draft pick of the then-Redskins back in the 2019 NFL draft out of Indiana. He started in five of the nine he played in during his rookie season. Then in 2020, Martin started in five more of the 16 games played in.

Martin was released by Washington on August 31 for cutdown day, but was immediately re-signed to the practice squad and has remained there since.

With the injuries to Shane Lemieux (knee) and Nick Gates (leg), the Giants were already in need of extra lineman with experience. Given how poorly Ben Bredeson played on Sunday against the Falcons, the move to sign Martin makes sense.

Martin has a lot of experience playing left guard, which will benefit him and could serve him well going into the remainder of the 2021 season.

In addition to Martin, the Giants also signed defensive back Jarren Williams to the practice squad.

The 24-year-old Williams originally signed with the Arizona Cardinals after going undrafted out of Albany in 2020. After being waived that July, he joined the Giants and spent most of last season on their practice squad. He was activated for two late in the season.

The Giants placed Williams on IR in late August and waived him with an settlement a few days later. He became free to re-sign with the team this week.

Finally, offensive lineman Jonotthan Harrison, who was activated for the team’s Week 3 game against the Atlanta Falcons, has reverted back to the practice squad.
